Community .As caring professionals we understand our corporate responsibility for the social and environmental impacts of our operations upon our employees, stakeholders and the wider community. Employment We seek to employ people from the communities we serve, both to reflect the diversity of those communities and to draw upon the local knowledge and understanding of the people within them. |

We are committed to the principle of direct employment whenever practicable. We provide a progressive working environment for our employees providing apprenticeships, comprehensive training, opportunities for personal development, programmes of social events and a caring attitude, all of which combine to promote job satisfaction. Honesty, openness and integrity are encouraged by the example set by the senior management and staff have recourse to report any illegal or unethical behaviour or any other malpractice. Equality and Diversity Jarvis seeks a balanced workforce reflecting the community in which we operate. To this end we advertise in local newspapers, community centres and shops and liaise with local schools, colleges and Job Centres. We are unreservedly opposed to any form of unfair discrimination and take steps to develop the understanding of our staff in the areas of equality and diversity and are committed to ensuring that all of our dealings with people are fair and equitable and that equality of opportunity becomes an integral feature of all our activities. Health and Safety The health and safety of both our workforce and our customers is paramount. We recognise that our activities may expose employees and others to high-risk activities and that all levels of management, supervisors and employees have an active part to play to ensure these risks are kept to a minimum or eliminated altogether. Jarvis has been awarded the highly prestigious British Safety Council's National Safety Award for each of the last ten years. These awards were given in recognition of our commitment to best practice in the workplace. We have also embraced the CSCS scheme and most employees now hold, as a minimum, a green card which indicates a nationally recognised level of competence in health and safety matters. Environment We also understand the need to consider the impact of our operations upon the environment. Today, caring for the environment is more important than ever. Jarvis Group Ltd and its subsidiary companies recognise the need for this to be at the very heart of our operational philosophy and that care for our environment and the communities in which we operate is a primary corporate responsibility. We are committed to compliance with environmental legislation and take care to minimise noise, waste, pollution and energy consumption and to maximise the quantity of our waste which is recycled through the application of best-practice principles at all levels of our organisation with the aim of continually improving our environmental performance. We have expanded our environmental management system, using the six developmental stages recognised by BS8555, including staff training and support, and are now ISO 14001 registered. Community We strive to be good neighbours and fully support the Considerate Constructors programme. The Jarvis Group, together with The Jarvis Harpenden Charitable Trust, supports a number of local organisations and events. These include:
The Trust is currently supporting Harpenden Spotlight in Africa, for three years as from April 2010. For further information about the Trust, please contact The Lady Parkinson DL, c/o Jarvis Group Ltd, No1 Waterside, Station Road, Harpenden, Herts AL5 4US.
On a more national level, Action on Addiction and the building industry's charity, The Lighthouse Club, are regularly supported. The Lighthouse Club's objective is to give financial help to the victims of accidents and illness to people who have worked within the construction industry. Free reflective armbands for schools Jarvis Contracting is helping local schools reduce the likelihood of children being involved in road accidents by providing a number of free reflective armbands for their pupils. Steve Cook, Managing Director of Jarvis Contracting, says: 'As a local employer we take our community responsibilities very seriously and are currently supporting local schools in an endeavour to reduce the number of child road accidents.' Steve continues: 'Current road accident statistics show that around one third of accidents are associated with motorists “failing to look or notice” and every year almost 9000 children are killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads.' Jarvis Contracting has built strong partnerships with many schools throughout Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire, helping them to achieve high quality learning facilities through the provision of building & maintenance services.
